The robot was developed by a company called Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) in Kyoto. They call it Robovie. Accordingly, the laser beams in the robot measure the social distance of the customers in the shop. The robot also politely requests them to protect their social distance.

ATR says it would be best to use such robotic workers to minimize contact between customers and its employees, especially in the event of an epidemic.
