Zac Efron reportedly rushed to hospital

Zac Efron was believed to have been in Papua New Guinea filming his new TV show Killing Zac Efron.

High School Musical and Baywatch star Zac Efron was reportedly flown to Australia after contracting a deadly illness while filming in Papua New Guinea, according to reports from The Sunday Telegraph and Daily Mail.

The news reports stated that the 32-year-old actor suffered a "form of typhoid or similar bacterial infection" that triggered "a life or death medical emergency".

Zac Efron is believed to have been in Papua New Guinea filming his upcoming docu-adventure series Killing Zac Efron, which is set to see the actor trek through jungles in a format similar to Man vs. Wild. Just before Christmas, he was reportedly flown to Brisbane, Australia by a medical evacuation crew, and hospitalized at St Andrews War Memorial Hospital.

The actor is now believed to have recovered and is currently back in the US.

According to The Sunday Telegraph, Dr Glenn McKay, Director of Medical Rescue - the organisation that oversaw Efron’s flight - declined to confirm the patient was the Hollywood star. But he confirmed the organisation “retrieved a US citizen in his 30s from PNG to Brisbane for medical attention in Australia”.

Zac Efron rose to fame with the immensely popular High School Musical franchise and was most recently lauded for his portrayal of serial killer Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile this year.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote about Zac Efron’s new TV series, stating that it features the actor venturing “deep into the jungle of a remote, dangerous island, falling off the grid for 21 days”.

Last month, Efron was announced as both star and executive producer on the Quibi adventure series, where he would forego all luxuries to survive with nothing but basic gear and a guide partner for the challenge.

Zac Efron was seen in photos posted on social media by Wewak tour guide Cyril Tara, who spoke about escorting the star around the island country.

Speaking ahead of filming, Efron reportedly said: "I tend to thrive under extreme circumstances and seek out opportunities that challenge me on every level.

"I am excited to explore any uncharted territory and discover what unexpected adventure awaits!"

How The Witcher Author Feels About Henry Cavill's New Netflix Series

Here’s what he had to say about Henry Cavill playing Geralt in The Witcher:

It’s often hard for adaptations to please authors of the original work. Alan Moore is a prime example, though Damon Lindelof had the perfect response to Moore’s displeasure with the HBO adaptation of Watchmen.
While Andrzej Sapkowski says he didn’t have much to do with The Witcher’s artistic direction — something he’s perfectly fine with — he told PEOPLE what he hoped audiences ultimately took away from Season 1.

It sure sounds like the author is referring to all the wizard nudity and overall hotness of Henry Cavill’s Geralt in The Witcher. Simply based on the internet’s reaction, viewers are already feeling the heat, so Andrzej Sapkowski has nothing to worry about on that front. Here’s one fan who didn’t think Cavill was all that great before, but The Witcher has altered their opinion.

The thirst continues in another tweet. Henry Cavill is having a huge effect on people as Geralt. Maybe it’s the wig.

There’s still no word on whether Netflix will renew the show for Season 2, though showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich says she could “write seven seasons.”

Drew Brees 40 puts on record-breaking show that would make Benjamin Button proud

Maybe Drew Brees really is Benjamin Button, as Sean Payton called him after his record-setting performance Monday night.

Perhaps Brees, like the character in the 2008 film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, really is aging in reverse.

Maybe Brees started his NFL career when he was 40 and now he's really 22, the age he was when all of these records he has since broken seemed so far-fetched.

After Monday's 34-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts where Brees set the record for career touchdown passes, he reflected to how crazy any of this would have sounded to him when he first entered the league.

He thought back to 2001 when he was a rookie with the San Diego Chargers and playing his first preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. He remembers looking up at the Dolphins' Ring of Honor and seeing Dan Marino's name up there and all those gaudy statistics beside it.

"I just sat there and my jaw just kinda dropped like 'how do you play that long and throw for that many yards and touchdowns and everything else?'" Brees recalled. "... You're sitting there thinking that's light years away. Now you look at the journey and here we are."

Brees, who many thought at one time wasn't quite tall enough to make it in the NFL, once again is standing above everyone else at the top of a list of one of the most precious records in all of football. His 5-yard touchdown pass to Josh Hill broke Peyton Manning's record of 539. Brees now holds the record for career passing yards, touchdowns and completion percentage. Former Washington Redskins' quarterback Sammy Baugh is the only other quarterback to hold all three of those records at the same time. But Baugh played in the 1930's, 40's and 50's. Plenty more quarterbacks so great that you only need a last name when you're talking about them have come along since then.

Marino. Montana. Favre. Manning. Brady.

Brees has surpassed them all in the record books.

And chances are, this latest one could be broken as soon as Saturday when Tom Brady (538 touchdown career touchdown passes) and the New England Patriots play the Buffalo Bills. And chances are, Brees will have to break it again the next day when the Saints play the Tennessee Titans.

But for now, the record belongs to Brees, set on a night neither he nor the 73,053 people in the Mercedes Benz Superdome will ever forget.

The record-setting football is headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Brees will be in Canton, Ohio someday too. That's if he ever actually decides to retire.

David Baker, president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, normally comes to record-breaking games like the one Brees had Monday night.

Baker is usually there on the sideline wearing white gloves to keep the ball as sacred as possible before sending it off to the Hall of Fame.

This particular ball didn't need any white gloves. It barely touched the ground. Brees threw just one incompletion and finished 29 of 30 (an NFL record for completion percentage) for 307 yards and 4 touchdowns.

"I go out there with the expectation that the ball shouldn't touch the ground," Brees said.

And while 30 for 30 would have been perfect, Brees couldn't imagine a night going much better than this one did. His teammates from the Saints' Super Bowl season were there. So were two of his best friends from college. And of course Payton, the coach who believed in Brees and convinced him to come to New Orleans 13 years ago. Payton and Brees, who ave made magic ever since coming together in 2006, exchanged a big hug after the record breaker.

"I wouldn't be here without Sean," Brees said. "The time we've had together, the experiences we've had together from the very beginning. What he has built here as far as far as the foundation and the culture. (General manager) Mickey Loomis as well. Two of the most integral parts of this whole organization are certainly the reason I am here. I will forever be indebted to those guys."

And most importantly, Brees' family was there. After setting the record, he blew five kisses towards the section where his wife and kids were sitting. One for Brittany. One for Baylen. One for Bowen. One for Callen. And one for Rylen.

They get a chance to share in this. These are moments we can reflect on and we can talk about. They ask questions about it. When they get older, we can appreciate them more."

Except there's that one problem.

Games like this make you wonder if the ageless wonder in the No. 9 Saints' jersey is getting any older. Or is Payton right about Brees aging in reverse.

Is Brees really just a 22-year old kid chasing a dream? Or is he a 40-year old whose dreams just keep on coming true?

According to Brees, it's the latter.

"I get to come to work every day and do something I love to do and be around guys I want to be around," Brees said. "Not everybody gets to do that, So I consider myself very fortunate, very blessed to be a part of this team and play the game this long and have these special moments that I will remember forever."

The Eagles playoff scenarios after Week 15, with Cowboys game looming next

LANDOVER, Md. — The Eagles held on to postseason hopes Sunday when they rallied to beat the three-win Redskins, 37-27. It wasn’t pretty, but the victory allowed the injury-depleted team, and the well-traveling Philly fans who occupied many of the seats at FedEx Field, to consider the real possibility of an NFC East title.

The Eagles are now 7-7. The Cowboys, meanwhile, are also 7-7 after handily beating the Los Angeles Rams, 44-21.

Here’s a breakdown of how the Eagles could clinch the division and who they could host in the wild-card round of the playoffs if they win. Don’t bank on this just yet.

Bottom line: The Eagles must beat the Cowboys next week to play in January.

The Eagles can win the NFC East if:

Eagles news in your inbox year-round

If they win, the Eagles could play

they beat the Cowboys next week and the Giants the following week.

they beat the Cowboys and lose to the Giants, and the Cowboys lose to the Redskins.

San Francisco (11-3): Because San Francisco lost to the Atlanta Falcons, 29-22, on Sunday, the 49ers moved from the No. 1 to the No. 5 seed. The 49ers are tied with the Seahawks for first place in the NFC West, but the Seahawks beat the 49ers earlier this season. If both teams win next week (the 49ers host the Rams and the Seahawks host the Cardinals), the division winner will be decided when the Seahawks and the 49ers face off in Seattle in the regular-season finale, and the loser would play the winner of the NFC East in the wild-card round.

Seattle (11-3): Russell Wilson and his Seattle team beat the Panthers, 30-24, to improve to 11-3. If you’ll recall, the Eagles lost to the Seahawks in a dreadful 17-9 game in Week 13. Seattle plays the 4-9-1 Cardinals and then the 49ers in the last two weeks of the regular season.

Minnesota (10-4): The Vikings beat the Chargers, 39-10, to remain the current sixth seed in the conference. Like the Seahawks, Minnesota beat the Eagles in their most recent meeting, a 38-20 game in Week 6, when the Eagles still had some healthy starting wide receivers. The Vikings round out their regular season by hosting the 11-3 Packers and the 7-7 Bears.

Top 10 Hottest Air Jordans Of 2019

Jordan Brand's 2019 lineup featured an exhausting amount of Air Jordan retros, as is tradition. The year was highlighted by the 30th anniversary of Michael Jordan's fourth signature sneaker - the Air Jordan 4 - which returned in several different colorways including two of the most beloved styles.

On top of that, Jordan Brand brought back numerous all-time classics, plenty of never before seen colorways, and introduced a collab that deserves to be mentioned in the "sneaker of the year" conversation. There are surely more than 10 Air Jordans from the past 12 months that deserve to be on this year-end list, but I digress.

Scroll down to check out my picks for the 10 Hottest Air Jordans of 2019 along with StockX purchase links so you can cop your pair today.

Air Jordan 6 "Infrared"
The iconic "Black Infrared" Air Jordan 6 that Michael Jordan wore during his first NBA title run made it's always-welcomed return to retailers on February 16, 2019 as part of Nike's annual All-Star game collection. The kicks, which were previously retro'd in 2014, came back to life in OG form this year, featuring the familiar smooth, black nubuck upper, infrared detailing.

Jordan 11 Bred

As always, there were no shortage of Air Jordan 1 releases this year. The iconic silhouette is a fan favorite regardless of the colorway, but there was something particularly special about the "Turbo Green" pair that dropped in honor of Charlotte hosting its first NBA All Star game.

The special edition 1s, which nod to the '90s and the Charlotte Hornets, feature a suede and leather construction highlighted by that vintage-looking turbo green color as well as purple and gold detailing on the tongue's "Nike Air" branding.

Air Jordan 4 "Bred"
This sneaker could release every single year, and every single year it would be among the best releases of that year. The latest iteration of the "Bred" Air Jordan 4 arrived in May, and it looked just as sweet as it did when it originally launched 30 years ago.

Returning in OG form, the iconic 4s were built on a black nubuck, supported by the familiar grey and red detailing along with the aesthetically pleasing "Nike Air" branding on the heel for the first time since 1999.

Air Jordan 10 "Seattle"
The Air Jordan 10 "Seattle" finally returned to retailers in 2019 for the first time since it originally released as part of the "City Series" way back in 1995.

The original Air Jordan 10 "City Series" released while Michael Jordan was away from the game, The collection consisted of the Seattle Supersonics colorway, as well as iterations for the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Orlando Magic and Sacramento Kings. The Chicago and Orlando desgins have been retro'd since the initial release - but the white, green and black "Seattle" colorway had never resurfaced until this year.

Air Jordan 7 "Ray Allen"
2019 marked the 23rd anniversary of Ray Allen's draft class, which presented Jordan Brand the perfect opportunity to release a special edition colorway that combined two of Ray's classic "Milwaukee Bucks" Air Jordan 7 PEs. I may be in the minority on this one, but the Air Jordan 7 is a favorite of mine and this particular color scheme just isn't one you typically see on an Air Jordan. Add in the cool story behind the design and it makes the list as one of my top picks of the year.

Travis Scott and Jordan Brand teamed up for several different sneaker collabs this year, but none was more polarizing than the "Cactus Jack" Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG. All told, this may have been the sneaker of the year. Sure, the low-top version was cool, too - but it doesn't really come close to the AJ1 High.

Air Jordan 6 "Doernbecher"
Nike brought back several iconic "Doernbecher" sneaker collabs this years in celebration of 15 years of the Doernbecher Freestyle Collection. Among them, the navy suede Air Jordan 6 which very well could be the best DB x Air Jordan collab of all-time.

The kicks, originally created by Jordan Dark in 2009, feature a number of special details include two significant dates of his battle against cancer - "06/08" for his first day of chemo, and 04/09 representing his last. The midnight navy and varsity red colorway serves as a nod to Dark's high school's colors, while the outsole introduced the first ever all-translucent outsole on the AJ6 silhouette.

‘SNL’ Takes on Holiday Season With Scarlett Johansson as Host

Actress Scarlett Johansson hosted the episode and Niall Horan was the musical guest.

In the second-to-last episode before the winter holidays, “Saturday Night Live” brought viewers into the homes of average American families in a parody of the political discourse surrounding President Donald Trump’s impeachment and other issues dividing the country.

Scarlett Johansson
Aidy Bryant kicked off the episode’s cold open dressed as an old-timey snowman.

“Well, well, well, it’s almost Christmas,” Bryant said. “And folks in America seem more divided than ever. But if we listen in to some dinner conversations tonight, I bet we find out we have more in common than we realize. And now we can listen, because I hacked into three Nest home cams.”

The segment went on to feature three families’ holiday dinners as they lampooned today’s political and cultural discourse, before Kate McKinnon interrupted Bryant with an impression of teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg.

“I also have a Christmas message,” she said. “In 10 years, this snowman won’t exist. Her home will be a puddle. Santa, reindeer, the North Pole. All of it — gone.”

Johansson, who was hosting for her sixth time, delivered a monologue that took a dramatic turn when cast members started turning to dust.

“Oh my god, am I going to have to save everyone?”

Colin Jost opened this week’s “Weekend Update” with news of the House Judiciary approving the articles of the impeachment.

“Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, who was accidentally CGI’d to look like both Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro, appealed to Republicans on the committee saying, ‘When Trump’s time is passed, how will you be remembered?’” Jost said.

Jost continued: “Remembered? I barely know you now and I think you’re my congressman. I hate to break it to you, but the only way Americans remember a congressman is if he sends someone a picture of his penis. And we only remembered that because his name was Weiner.”

In another part of “Weekend Update,” Bowen Yang returned as a saucy Chinese trade official, a fictional character he first introduced to “SNL” in October.

“Well Mr. Biao, for those of us who don’t know, what exactly is a tariff?” asked anchor Michael Che.

“Okay, I’ll explain,” Yang said. “A tariff is like a tax but it’s a little bit b----y.”

Musical guest Niall Horan, donning a pale pink suit, serenaded the crowd with his song “Nice to Meet Ya,” the lead single on his upcoming second studio album. The song was co-written by Horan and singer-songwriter Ruth-Anne Cunningham.

For his second song, Horan performed “Put a Little Love on Me,” another single from his next album.

Luka Doncic scores 41, Pistons fall in Mexico City

The Mavericks' Luka Doncic dribbles the ball against Pistons in the first half.

Despite Doncic’s offensive outburst, the Pistons were within single digits early in the fourth quarter but fell to the Mavericks, 122-111, on Thursday night before a sellout crowd of 20,064 at Mexico City Arena.

Doncic was the catalyst, with the highest individual point total and first triple-double in an NBA game in Mexico City.

“We had an off-shooting night. We’re going to take their shots and we’re a 3-point-shooting team,” Casey said. “We started to make them down the stretch, but it was too late.

“Defensively, we missed a lot of rotations trying to get the ball out Doncic’s hands, which was difficult to do. He sees the whole floor and he picked us apart.”

BOX SCORE: Mavericks 122, Pistons 111

Andre Drummond had 23 points and 15 rebounds and Derrick Rose 16 points for the Pistons (10-15), who ended their two-game streak and finish their three-game trip on Saturday against the Houston Rockets.

The Pistons had their biggest lead, 58-51, after a 14-0 run, starting with back-to-back baskets by Drummond and finishing with a 3-pointer by Tony Snell (12 points), but the Mavericks (17-7) turned the tables, with a 14-0 run over the last 2:44 of the second quarter.

Doncic had a three-point play to end the Pistons’ run and added a 3-pointer and a reverse to finish the half with a 65-58 lead. Seth Curry (30 points, seven rebounds and four assists) sparked the second-quarter surge for Dallas.

“In the last three minutes of the first half is where it started. We lost Curry and he made nine straight points with three threes,” Casey said. “We took some of our missed shots from one end and it took our energy. That was a big stretch for them in the last few minutes.”

The Mavs continued the surge with a 13-2 run, with four points by Kristaps Porzingis (20 points) and five points and two assists in the first four-plus minutes. Dallas’ run reached 25-8 and a 24-point margin, after two more baskets by Porzingis and some scintillating plays by Doncic.

Rose and Markieff Morris (16 points) carried the offense, combining for 17 straight Pistons points, with two 3-pointers apiece, igniting a 19-2 run and getting the Pistons within 95-85 entering the fourth quarter.

Morris had a chance to get within eight after being fouled on a 3-pointer but made just one of the three free throws. Curry followed with a 3-pointer and Jalen Brunson added another. After another basket by Morris, Doncic hit a final 3-pointer, pushing the lead back to 107-90, with 7:31 left.

Doncic has a strong start with 15 points in the first quarter and Curry entered in the final minutes of the period and picked up where Doncic left off, hitting a 3-pointer and scoring on a drive. Christian Wood finished the quarter with a dunk, pulling the Pistons within 34-29.

Curry continued the onslaught, with back-to-back 3-pointers and scored 16 straight points for the Mavericks, helping push the lead to 45-37.

Observations
► The fans in Mexico City were knowledgeable about their favorite NBA players. They gave strong ovations for the Mavericks’ Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis and also for the Pistons’ Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose. Early in the game, Rose received “MVP! MVP!” chants when he entered the game as a reserve.

► Things got chippy after a push from Bruce Brown on Doncic and Drummond tried to intervene. Kristaps Porzingis took exception and there were some words exchanged but no technical fouls.

► The Pistons were outrebounded, 52-34. The minus-18 differential is a rarity for the Pistons, who usually dominate because of Drummond, the league’s leading rebounder.

“They did a better job on him in the second half and put bodies on him, paying attention to him,” Casey said.

► Both team owners — the Pistons’ Tom Gores and the Mavericks’ Mark Cuban — were in Mexico City for the game. They talked a bit at halftime and spent some time with NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who had earlier found out that former commissioner David Stern had suffered a health scare earlier in the day.

► The Pistons’ entertainment teams were a big part of the game-day presentation, with PA announcer Mason getting the crowd hyped with a “Dee-troit Bas-ketball!” chant in the pregame. The cheerleaders and dance teams, along with the Extreme Team, the athletic trampoline performers, also were on hand.

The Matrix 4 and John Wick 4 Get the Same Release Date

In news that would make The Matrix's chosen one Neo say 'woah', follow-ups to two of Keanu Reeves' major franchises are now scheduled to hit cinemas on the same day. Prior to Warner Bros.' announcement that The Matrix 4 will release on May 21, 2021, it was previously announced by Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate that the equally anticipated John Wick 4 will blast its way onto the big screen that same weekend.

So, the question remains, who will win in a face-off between the super-powered Neo and the head-shooting, pencil stabbing John Wick? The fact that the former can stop bullets is surely to Wick's detriment, but the stylish hitman does have a knack for being able to face-down impossible odds.

Hardly anything is yet known about the upcoming The Matrix 4, but it is something that fans have been crying out for, for some time, particularly in the wake of Keanu Reeves' recent popularity. We do know that the movie will reunite Reeves with his Matrix trilogy co-star Carrie-Anne Moss, starring as Neo and Trinity respectively, and that the two will once again be under the direction of a returning Lana Wachowski.

Wachowski will also serve as co-writer alongside David Mitchell and Aleksander Hemon, both of whom she worked with on Netflix's trippy sci-fi series Sense8. Joining Reeves and Moss are Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Toby Onwumere and Jonathan Groff. Who these newcomers will be playing remains a mystery, but theories abound that Abdul-Mateen will be playing either a young Morpheus, or Morpheus' offspring.

Considering the huge opening weekend box office of John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, Summit Entertainment and Lionsgate wasted no time in confirming that John Wick 4 would indeed have Neo and co. in its sights with a planned release date of May 21, 2021. The third movie in the John Wick series, Parabellum became the highest grossing installment in the action franchise, bringing in more than $326 million at the worldwide box office. With such a solid base, it is likely that the fourth movie will not budge from this May release date, putting Keanu Reeves in the very, very rare position of having two tentpole movies opening together, essentially putting him in competition with himself.

Knowing the gentle, humble nature of the breathtaking actor that is Keanu Reeves, he would no doubt end up in an awkward scenario whereby both Reeveses tried to step aside to let the other Reeves through, trapping them in an endless cycle of politeness.

Whether the two movies will stick with this same release date remains to be seen, as neither is set in stone, and release dates do often move around. If they do stick with it though, which one are you seeing first, and who do you think will come out on top? This comes from Comicbook.com.

Jersey City shooting - Six dead, including police officer and two gunmen

JERSEY CITY — Five people died in a tense gun battle that started after a city police officer was shot dead in a cemetery just after noon Tuesday and ended in a kosher supermarket three and a half hours later.

The five people, which included two gunmen armed with high-powered rifles, were found dead inside the supermarket on Martin Luther King Drive at 3:30 p.m. Police Chief Mike Kelly said the gunmen killed three people in the store, but he did not say whether the gunmen took their own lives or were killed by police.

It was one of the worst, if not the worst, shooting incident in the city’s history.

Two Jersey City police officers were wounded in the standoff that drew law enforcement from other municipalities as well as the FBI, ATF and State Police. Streets were closed for blocks in every direction and schools across the city were placed on lockdown as gunfire rang out throughout the afternoon.

Area residents gathered close to the police tape, recoiling at the sound of high-powered weapons going off. Parents, some stricken with panic, waited impatiently for their children to be released from school.

“This was like the wild, wild West,” said Felicia Carmichael, who lives nearby on Orient Avenue.

It is believed the gun battle started when Detective Joe Seals, 39, was fatally shot at Bayview Cemetery. Kelly would not say what Seals, who was on duty, was doing in the cemetery, only that he came upon “bad guys.” Seals is the 35th Jersey City police officer to die in the line of duty.

The gunmen, who were not identified, fled to the store on MLK Drive near Bidwell Avenue and gunshots rang out. When police responded, the gunmen opened fire, forcing police back.

Two other police officers, Mariela Fernandez and Ray Sanchez, suffered gunshot wounds, one in the shoulder and another in the body, Kelly said. Both officers were treated at the Jersey City Medical Center and released.

“When you lose an officer they say he was a great officer and they took pride in their job,” Mayor Steve Fulop said while talking about Seals, a father of five. “In this situation it happens to be true.”

Police seized a stolen U-Haul they believe was utilized by the two gunmen. Kelly said devices that may be “incendiary” devices were found inside.

“The police department in Jersey City and our partners did an extraordinary job ... under gunfire from high-powered rifles,” Kelly said.

City Public Safety Director Jim Shea said there was no indication that this was an act of terrorism. Kelly declined to discuss any motives for the shooting, saying the investigation is in its early stages.

The names of the three people who died in the supermarket were not released Tuesday night.

“This was an incredibly tough day for Jersey City,” Gov. Phil Murphy said. “There are days that require us to stop and think about what it means to put on a uniform every day.”

Journal staff writer Peter D’Auria contributed to this report.
